Aims
To enable candidates to get help & give adequate and efficient paediatric First Aid to a casualty in their care following an injury or illness using material to hand and first aid equipment |
Objectives
On completion of training, successful candidates should be able to:
- understand the role of the paediatric first aider including reference to the use of available equipment and the need for recording incidents and actions;
- understand the importance of basic hygiene in first-aid procedures;
- assess the situation and circumstances in order to act safely, promptly and effectively in an emergency;
- administer first aid to a baby or child who is unconscious and/or in seizure;
- administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation to a baby or child ;
- administer first aid to a baby or child who is wounded or bleeding and/or in shock;
- administer first aid to a baby or child who is choking;
- provide appropriate first aid to a baby or child for minor injuries.
Syllabus
Introduction, registration welcome and domestics

Assessment of an emergency situation and prioritisaton of what action to take;

Unconsciousness including the Recovery Postion;

CPR for baby or child;

Seizures;

Choking;

Slight & Severe bleeding;

Medical shock (from severe blood loss).

Certificate:
A 3 year Certificate of Competence will be awarded on successful completion of the course and assessment.

- Our courses all use student centred methods such as skill demonstrations & practice, groupwork, question & answer sessions & case studies. We augment the above strategies with tutorials & demonstrations to give a well balanced interactive learning experience for all students.
- Formative Assessment will be ongoing throughout the course by the trainer. On our FAW courses there is a final assessment on the last day conducted by independent assessors.
